Much has been made in the media about the expansion of pretrial release programs. Bail bodnsmen see this as an encroachment of their market, while many public entities believe is in the best interest of the communities. More specifically, the budget. Bail bondsmen are right to point out that they incur a number of costs that will become the responsibility of the county or other governmental body with pretrial release programs. How about defendant monitoring? Part of the cost of doing business for a bail bondsman. How about fugitive recovery? There again, on the bail bondsman's dime. These and other things will become additional and virtually uncontrollable costs with pretrial release programs. I am afraid, this is another instance of the private sector having the ability to do something better, more efficiently and more cost effectively than the governement.

Just found a great article on Technorati about the difficult times that bail bondsmen face right now. In essence, the article said most believe bail bonds are recession proof and are seemingly infallible. It went onto correct this misconception by pointing to the fact that fewer defendants and cosigners are credit worthy in this environment. In addition, it cited the push towards pre trial release programs which supplant bail bonds. Great article. I will find the link and post it soon.

I have created some tips to help people going through the bail bonds process. They outline 3 things to think about while contemplating who to hire to post your bail bond. In a nutshell they are:

1) All bail bonds are priced the same, but they don't cost the same. Ask about flexible payment plans, credit card options and bonds in which you don't have to post collateral.

2) The level of customer service varies greatly from bail bondsman to bail bondsman. Just as with any service business, take your time and hire the one that you feel is the best fit.

3) Don't ever lie to a bail bondsman about your contact info, address, working situation or anything else. It will only come back to bite you in the behind. Remember they are providing your Las Vegas bail bonds as a service. They can actually rescind that service and put you back into jail. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
